i got the blues by markstewart i got the blues by markstewart
going through some old photo's and came across this one of my little brother. It was challenging but i just had to draw it. He was not having a good day, maybe because he had to wear that hat.
Graphite on A4 Bristol.

Thanks, this one is of my little brother, i had not heard from him in over 20yrs and he pops up out of the blue last November on my doorstep. Best gift ever and so glad to have him back in my life :D so i did this for him to remind him how close we were. He always was a grumpy child

Love this drawing, the jumper looks soft and the wooly hat is amazing, did you actually draw every stitch? Yes, the look definately something to do with the hat lol

I'm glad you like it, My little brother disappeared 23yrs ago and turned up out of the blue at my door last September. I didn't even recognize him, it was a very good day :D. We were very close as children. I had no idea how i was going to draw the hat right up to the day i had to draw it. Thats how i like to work, make it up as i go. It took an hour and was not as hard as it looks. I think the trick is not to try to detail it but to draw the impression of it. The jumper was scribbled in roughly with a dark soft pencil and blended roughly with a stiff brush, Then i added patches with the same pencil and left those areas unblended, and lifted some patches off with a kneadable eraser. Maybe i should upload close ups so people can see how i do it.

What a sad time when your brother disappeared, was he a child or teenager? Must of been a terrible time for you and your family but lovely he turned up at your door that must of been an undescribable joyous moment for you, Hope he sorted his probs out. :)
Your tactics worked well with your drawing, it would be great to see how you do your work! Im always looking for ideas, I am a self taught Artist (no uni or studies done)so that would be handy, never heard of a brush being used on drawings before, must try it myself sometime  I get very frustrated when my drawings arent getting more realistic :frustrated: Your work is awesome!:faint:

I use brushes to blend the undercoat layers on hair and other things that don't need too much control, Some use powdered graphite applied with a brush. Experiment using whatever you can think of and observe the effects and keep a mental note. You never know when it will come in handy. I get funny looks when i see a different make up brush in a shop and just have to have it  Basically if you can smudge with it then it will blend. Oh and he was 25 when he vanished, never did sort his problems out but needs help doing it now. Big brother to the rescue ( just nice to know he's still alive and well). On your last note i know that sometimes the standard takes a big leap forward but most of the time it's little steps at a time. You have experimented with your skin textures to good effect on your recent drawings which is a good step forward and you paint beautifully :D

Glad you are there for your brother, you are very special big brother for him.
I will be more patient with my pencil art, practise practice practise and experiment is the key. Glad you like my paintings

Wow the softness is awesome! I love how you captured the light on the hat and the jacket.
Your brother must have been very proud when he saw this. I think it is very hard to draw a person you really know and to be satisfied with the result. Particularly if the person is your little brother^^
Kudos!

Thanks. A hard expression to capture. Took a few attempts. Changed paper type twice. I find i can't do all my work on the same paper type but haven't worked out why yet and that is driving me nuts lol.

Thanks for that, the sweater was drawn with a 4B pencil doing rough circular scribbles of all sizes and directions, more in dark areas and then i used an old cheap flat hogshair paintbrush to roughly blend but not too much. Then get an old dirty kneadable eraser and roughly dab off patches, this helps to make it look old and well worn. The hat was just about looking and understanding what was going on and just giving the impression of it without getting too detailed, done with a 2B, I found it intimidating but it was easier than i first thought. Try it yourself.

That's pretty slick. Not bad at all for traditional media- your work continues to fascinate me. I'm sure this took you some time- how large is the actual media you were working on? I always have a hard time getting much detail into smaller sheets.

Thanks,Yes i am pleased with the look, it's the first time trying wooly stuff. It was a good learning exercise. Getting the eyes right was probably the hardest part

The eyes are the key to a true likeness, so important to get right, so its worth taking that bit longer to get right....
I have attempted a few friends and my daughter but not entirely happy with them. Find it difficult to draw close ones...

Yes, i find it hard to do family and have drawn my son but was never happy. I may try him again but i expect i wont be happy with it again. I did my sister and she has it on display and i avoid looking at it when i visit. They are never right.
